I found the the book Fun and full of imagination. It really has a sort of Alice in wonderland feel to it with a lot of depth in description. You really feel your in the story from about the 15th page into the story. It sort of catches you unaware something is happening. If your a person that likes adventures, imagination, and fun this is a good book for a long weekend in a chair on the porch. Great first book Michael keep up the good work!Product details

Boy In Babylon J Michael Shoemaker 9780982804902 Books Reviews
I couldn't disagree more with RACON...I loved this book! It is the amazing adventure of a young boy, David, travelling with his mentor and companion, Oge, on multiple escapades to get David where he belongs....home and family. It is so well written, and from the view point of an adult man who remembers the joy of youth and the promise of his life beyond...he describes in great detail so many senses....sight, sound, smells, feelings....I believe this will prove a big hit with not just this generation, but the many to come....destined to be on many Christmas and birthday lists! I liked it so well, I bought FOUR books one for each of my three adult daughters, and a HARD COPY for me! This author has only just begun...can't wait for the next book!
Keeping in mind that this book was written as a Wonderland for boys, makes it easier to see past the way this book was written. It's meant for kids, but even adults can find it entertaining and meaningful. I suppose it helps to know much of the author's own past as well. Growing up in Beaufort, SC is usually pretty boring, unless you have a vivid imagination and a patch of woods behind your house to run wild in military surplus uniforms. I enjoyed the story and would love to see another adventure, if not with David then with another boy with as much spirit and room to grow. Keep it up, Bro!
I gave it a go and got to about page 30 and stopped, not because the target audience is children, though a friend said it is really a journey for all ages; rather, I don't think it is a well-written book.
With stale prose, "Boy..." reads less like a book and more like bad stage direction, with Shoemaker narrating down to the minutia; superfluous details already implied. Some of the fundamental elements fall short, such as grammar and punctuation, reflective of either the author or possibly poor editing. Also, the dialogue fails too, because people don't talk as they do in the story; and, the dialogue is crammed into the paragraphs and disrupts any chance of flow. I feel Shoemaker should also limit the use of cliche expressions.
"Boy..." is heavy with adverbs, and I get thrown by the lack of pronouns, seeing the characters' names to excess on a single page.
This book just didn't do it for me, but I'll do the courtesy of seeing it to the end.
This is a very interesting book in that it is written for children and teens but it has so much for adults as well. I have met and know all of the interesting characters in the book in real life. I found it to be a wonderful story and great fun for the imagination.
